Windstorm Damages Newly Completed Smart School in Enugu, Questions ₦158 Billion Project
Windstorm Destroys Newly Completed ‘Smart School’ in Enugu, Raising Questions About ₦158 Billion Project
A newly completed “Smart School” in Enugu State was reportedly damaged by a sudden windstorm, reigniting concerns about the quality and oversight of the state’s ambitious ₦158 billion Smart Schools initiative.
The incident occurred at one of the recently constructed Smart Green Schools in Nkanu East Local Government Area, where the roof and structural frames were torn off during the storm. Video footage circulating online showed roofing materials and wooden structures scattered across the school compound. Fortunately, no students or staff were on the premises at the time, averting potential injuries.
The damage has prompted scrutiny from residents, community leaders, and education advocates, many of whom are questioning the quality of construction and engineering standards applied to the Smart Schools project. Critics argue that a structure failing so soon after completion raises concerns about the oversight, materials used, and adherence to safety regulations.
Enugu State has invested heavily in the Smart Schools initiative, which aims to modernize education with digital learning facilities and sustainable infrastructure. The project, valued at approximately ₦158 billion, has been hailed as a transformative approach to education, but incidents like this fuel doubts about the execution and accountability mechanisms in place.
This is not the first time Enugu’s Smart School programme has faced challenges. In July 2025, a Smart School in Isi-Uzo LGA was demolished by the government after structural defects were discovered.
In January 2026, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) reportedly recovered over ₦1.2 billion from contractors allegedly involved in substandard work on some Smart Schools.
These previous issues, combined with the recent windstorm damage, have intensified public debate about the project’s sustainability and the oversight of contracts involving large public funds.
Residents and education stakeholders have expressed mixed feelings. While some applaud the government’s effort to modernize education, others are concerned that incidents like this reflect broader systemic challenges, including poor project supervision and weak accountability.
Many locals are calling for independent inspections of all Smart School structures, transparent reports on contractors and project standards and swift repairs or reconstruction to prevent further disruption to students’ learning
As of now, Enugu State authorities have not released an official statement regarding the windstorm damage, the cause, or the plan for repairs. Education stakeholders and community members are awaiting clarification on whether the school will be rebuilt promptly and if measures will be put in place to prevent similar incidents.

The windstorm damage to Enugu’s newly completed Smart School underscores the importance of quality assurance, transparent project execution, and effective oversight when public funds are invested in large-scale infrastructure projects.
While the Smart Schools initiative holds great promise for improving education in Enugu State, incidents like this serve as a reminder that implementation and accountability are just as critical as funding.
The coming weeks will likely determine how quickly the facility can be restored and whether lessons from this incident will influence future projects across the state.
