Sokoto State Launches ₦1 Billion Ramadan Feeding Programme, Targets 34,000 Meals Daily

The Sokoto State Government has officially launched its ₦1 billion Ramadan Feeding Programme for 2026, aiming to provide 34,000 nutritious meals daily to the less privileged across the state during the holy month of Ramadan. The initiative is part of the government’s broader social intervention strategy to ease hardship for vulnerable residents.

Officials revealed that the programme will operate across 170 feeding centres, up from 155 in previous years, to ensure maximum coverage across Sokoto’s local government areas. Each centre will serve a carefully prepared, hygienic meal to residents, with emphasis on quality, nutrition, and safety.

Governor Ahmed Aliyu flagged off the programme, describing it as a key initiative to support families during Ramadan. “This programme reflects our commitment to alleviating hardship and ensuring that no resident goes hungry during this blessed month,” the governor said.

The State Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, in collaboration with local government authorities, is coordinating the distribution. Meals are to be prepared and distributed under strict hygiene standards, with volunteers and government personnel overseeing operations at each centre.

The ₦1 billion budget for the programme covers meal preparation, packaging, logistics, and operational costs to ensure a seamless rollout throughout the month. Officials stressed that the initiative is inclusive, targeting the elderly, orphans, widows, and other vulnerable populations.

Observers note that Sokoto’s Ramadan Feeding Programme is among the most ambitious in northern Nigeria, reflecting a growing trend of state-led social welfare interventions. By distributing 34,000 meals daily, the initiative is expected to significantly reduce food insecurity for many residents, particularly during the fasting period.

Governor Aliyu encouraged residents to participate responsibly, maintain order at the feeding centres, and cooperate with officials to ensure equitable distribution.

As Ramadan approaches, the programme is set to strengthen the state’s social safety net, bringing relief to thousands of households across Sokoto State.
