Peter Obi Criticises Tinubu Over Reported Plan to Disconnect Aso Rock From National Grid

Peter Obi Questions Power Reforms as Aso Rock Presidential Vill Reportedly Plans Grid Exit

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over electricity reform efforts, questioning the rationale behind reports that the Aso Rock Presidential Villa may be disconnected from the national grid and powered independently.

Obi’s reaction follows media reports indicating that the Presidency is considering alternative power arrangements, including solar energy, to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply at the seat of government.

In a statement shared via his verified social media platforms, Obi argued that disconnecting the nation’s seat of power from the national grid sends the wrong signal at a time when millions of Nigerians continue to grapple with unstable electricity supply. He posed a rhetorical question: if those at the helm of leadership opt out of the national grid, who then will be responsible for ensuring ordinary citizens enjoy stable power?

Obi referenced past campaign promises surrounding improved electricity delivery, stressing that access to reliable power remains central to economic growth, job creation, and national productivity.

Nigeria’s power sector has faced longstanding structural challenges, including generation shortfalls, transmission constraints, and distribution inefficiencies. Despite reforms and privatization efforts over the past decade, national grid collapses and inconsistent supply remain frequent concerns.

The reported move to provide alternative energy at Aso Rock is viewed by some analysts as a practical step toward energy reliability, while critics argue it underscores systemic weaknesses within the broader power sector.

As of the time of reporting, officials have not framed the reported plan as a permanent abandonment of the national grid, but rather as a supplementary measure to guarantee steady power at critical government facilities.

The Presidency has maintained that efforts to reform the electricity sector are ongoing, including initiatives aimed at expanding generation capacity and strengthening infrastructure.

Obi’s comments have sparked renewed public discussion about accountability, campaign pledges, and the pace of reforms in the energy sector. Electricity remains one of the most pressing concerns for households and businesses across Nigeria.

As debates continue, stakeholders say the focus should remain on comprehensive, sustainable solutions capable of delivering stable power nationwide, not just to strategic government installations, but to every Nigerian home and enterprise.
