Nigeria Customs Service Seizes Smuggled Petrol, Car and Live Pangolins Worth ₦52.6m

Customs Zone D Intercepts Smuggled Petrol, Vehicle and Live Pangolins Worth Over ₦52 Million

Operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) under Federal Operations Unit Zone D have recorded a major enforcement breakthrough with the interception of smuggled petrol, a luxury vehicle, and endangered wildlife estimated to be worth over ₦52 million.

The seizures were made during coordinated operations carried out across several locations within the Zone’s area of responsibility.

According to Customs officials, the operation led to the recovery of; 15,300 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) stored in hundreds of jerrycans, a smuggled Mercedes-Benz ML350, several cartons of foreign goods brought into the country without proper documentation, and five live pangolins, a species classified as endangered

The seized petrol was reportedly intercepted in Adamawa State, while the vehicle was stopped along a major highway linking the Federal Capital Territory to neighbouring states. The pangolins were rescued during a separate enforcement action in Taraba State.

Customs authorities confirmed that suspects were taken into custody in connection with the illegal wildlife possession.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the smuggling network behind the activities.

The seizure of pangolins highlights the growing concern over wildlife trafficking in Nigeria. These animals are protected due to their declining population globally, and their illegal trade poses serious threats to biodiversity.

At the same time, fuel smuggling remains a significant economic challenge, as it; encourages black market activity, undermines government revenue, and distorts supply chains

Customs officials say tackling these crimes remains a priority for national security and economic stability.

Authorities noted that illegal possession and trade in protected wildlife, as well as smuggling of petroleum products and undeclared goods, violate provisions of Nigerian customs laws.

Those found culpable are expected to face prosecution under relevant legislation.

The rescued pangolins are expected to be handed over to conservation agencies for proper care and rehabilitation.

Meanwhile, the intercepted fuel and vehicle remain in Customs custody pending further investigation and legal processes.

The Nigeria Customs Service has reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying patrols and intelligence-led operations to combat smuggling activities across its zones.

Officials also called on members of the public to support enforcement efforts by providing useful information that could help curb illicit trade.
