I Was Asleep When He Hit Me” – Sister of Slain Onitsha Trader Speaks from Hospital

Sister of Slain Onitsha Trader Speaks from Hospital as Police Deepen Investigation

Fresh details have emerged in the tragic killing of an Onitsha businessman allegedly attacked by his apprentice, as the victim’s sister has now shared her account of the night that changed their family forever.

The deceased, Mr. Ikechukwu Nwite, was reportedly attacked at his residence located at No. 2 Enyiuko Street, Fegge, Onitsha. The suspect, identified as Chiemerie Anieka, is currently in police custody, with the case transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka for further investigation.

Speaking from her hospital bed in an interview with ABS, Ogechukwu Success Nwite, sister of the late trader, narrated how she narrowly escaped death.

According to her, she was asleep when she suddenly felt a heavy object strike her head. Before she could comprehend what was happening, she was hit again. She said the suspect attempted a third strike, this time allegedly with a pistol, but she managed to grab his hand, struggle free, and run outside to raise alarm.

It was during the chaos that she discovered her brother lying unconscious in the kitchen, already gravely injured from the attack.

Ogechukwu is currently receiving medical treatment. Family sources say she has not yet been informed of her brother’s death and has been restricted from accessing the internet while she recovers.

According to Ogechukwu, the suspect had lived and worked with her brother for approximately three years under the Igbo apprenticeship system, a longstanding business mentorship model common in Onitsha and across southeastern Nigeria.

She stated that she was unaware of any serious conflict between the two, except for a recent reprimand her brother reportedly gave the apprentice over an issue at the shop. She expressed shock that what appeared to be a minor correction could escalate into such violence.

This latest revelation adds emotional weight to the earlier reports surrounding the incident, which shook the commercial city of Onitsha. The tragedy has sparked renewed debate about the challenges facing the traditional apprenticeship structure, a system historically credited with producing generations of successful entrepreneurs.

While the system has empowered countless young men, recent concerns have focused on discipline, external influences, exposure to crime, and the pressures facing youths in an increasingly unstable economic and social climate.

Authorities have confirmed that the suspect remains in custody and that the matter has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for thorough investigation.

Efforts to reach the deceased’s wife for comments were unsuccessful, as sympathisers reportedly filled the family residence following the incident.

As investigations continue, the Nwite family grapples with grief and unanswered questions. What began as a mentorship relationship meant to build a future has ended in a devastating loss.

For many in Onitsha, the tragedy is not only a criminal case but a painful reminder of the delicate balance between mentorship, discipline, and the unseen struggles young people may carry.
