Gabon Suspends Social Media Platforms Over Alleged Spread of False Information


The government of Gabon has announced the suspension of social media platforms across the country, citing concerns over the spread of false information and online content deemed harmful to public order.


The directive was issued by Gabon’s media regulatory body, the High Authority for Communication (HAC), which ordered the restriction “until further notice.” Authorities said the measure was necessary to curb what they described as the growing circulation of misleading, defamatory, and inflammatory content online.



In its official statement, the regulator expressed concern about the impact of certain digital content on national stability. It specifically referenced, the spread of false or unverified information, online hate speech and defamatory posts, cyberbullying and digital harassment, unauthorized publication of private information


Officials argued that such content posed risks to social cohesion and public morality, particularly during a period of heightened political and social tension.



Although authorities did not initially release a comprehensive list of affected services, reports indicated that major platforms such as Facebook and TikTok became inaccessible to many users shortly after the announcement. Internet users across Libreville and other regions reported disruptions in access to social networking sites.


The suspension comes amid rising domestic tensions, including labor disputes and public demonstrations in parts of the country. Analysts say governments in several African nations have, in recent years, temporarily restricted internet access or social media during periods of unrest, often citing national security or misinformation concerns.

Gabon’s authorities maintained that the decision was aimed at preserving public order and protecting citizens from harmful digital content. However, rights advocates have raised concerns about the implications of such measures on freedom of expression and access to information.



The High Authority for Communication described the suspension as temporary, though no specific timeline was given for restoration of full access. Citizens and businesses that rely on digital platforms for communication and commerce are closely monitoring developments.

As of the time of this report, the government has not indicated when normal access will resume.
