FCT Minister Nyesom Wike Backs Only Candidates Aligned with President Tinubu

Nyesom Wike Declares Support for Candidates Aligned with President Tinubu in FCT Area Council Elections

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced that he will support only candidates who are aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the forthcoming FCT Area Council elections scheduled for February 21, 2026.

Speaking at a public event in Abuja on Thursday, Minister Wike stated that his backing will be extended to candidates, regardless of their political party, who demonstrate loyalty to President Tinubu’s leadership and policies. “I will support any candidate who supports President Tinubu to win,” he said, emphasizing his commitment to the President’s agenda.

The declaration was made during a political gathering attended by FCT residents, party officials, and prospective council candidates. According to Wike, his support is contingent on alignment with the President’s vision for national and local governance, and he made clear that candidates not demonstrating such alignment would not receive his backing.

The FCT Area Council elections are scheduled to hold on February 21, 2026, covering all six area councils; Abaji, Abuja Municipal, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kwali and Kuje.  Voters will select chairpersons and council members for these local governments, which play crucial roles in municipal administration and service delivery across the Federal Capital Territory.

The statement has been widely reported in Nigerian media, confirming the Minister’s position and emphasizing that his political support is explicitly tied to alignment with the President.
