El-Rufai Alleges Political Motive Behind Arrest Invitation in Arise TV Interview

El-Rufai Describes Arrest Invitation as Political, Speaks on Arise TV

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has publicly alleged that a recent invitation extended to him by authorities was politically motivated, following what he described as an attempted arrest linked to his political stance.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Friday evening, El-Rufai questioned the circumstances surrounding the move against him, insisting that proper investigative procedures were not followed.

This invitation is political. You don’t arrest without investigation. Some of my friends who were invited were cleared but still asked to join the APC and also agree to Bola Tinibu’s second tenure,” he said.

During the interview, El-Rufai claimed that certain individuals known to him had previously been invited for questioning by authorities. According to him, although they were eventually cleared of any wrongdoing, they allegedly faced political pressure to align with the ruling party.

He suggested that the pattern indicates a broader attempt to influence political affiliations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

El-Rufai did not provide documentary evidence during the broadcast but maintained that the sequence of events surrounding his own invitation raised serious concerns about due process and neutrality.

The controversy follows reports that security operatives attempted to detain El-Rufai at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja shortly after his return to Nigeria from an overseas trip.

El-Rufai stated during the interview that he was not presented with a formal arrest warrant at the time. He argued that under Nigerian law, an arrest should follow a proper investigation and lawful procedure.

His legal team has reportedly indicated willingness to respond to any legitimate invitation, provided it complies with constitutional and statutory requirements.

El-Rufai, who has been increasingly vocal about his political position ahead of the 2027 elections, suggested that his current situation cannot be separated from the broader political climate.

He implied that tensions within the political space may be contributing to actions taken against him. The former governor has in recent months been associated with discussions around opposition realignments and potential political coalitions.

His remarks referencing President Bola Tinubu’s possible second tenure have further intensified debate within political circles.

While El-Rufai insists that the invitation was politically driven, no official statement confirming political motivation has been issued by relevant authorities.

The situation has generated mixed reactions across the political spectrum. Supporters view his claims as evidence of political intimidation, while critics argue that all public officials, past or present, should submit to lawful investigation where necessary.

As of the time of this report, it remains unclear whether formal charges have been filed or whether further legal proceedings will follow.
