Deadly Gunmen Attacks in Kwara State: Tinubu Deploys Army to Restore Peace

Nigeria Deploys Army After Deadly Attacks in Kwara State

Nigeria has been shaken by one of the deadliest attacks in recent months after gunmen targeted villages in Kwara State, leaving scores of residents dead and communities in fear. The violence, which occurred late Tuesday, focused on Woro village and surrounding areas, where attackers reportedly burned homes and shops, including the residence of a traditional ruler.

Initial reports from humanitarian organizations indicate that at least 162 bodies have been counted, though the numbers vary as recovery operations continue. Local authorities and eyewitnesses have cited lower figures, with some estimating 35–75 deaths so far. The Red Cross confirmed that survivors were forced to flee into nearby bushes as the attackers ransacked the community.

This tragic event highlights the growing insecurity in some parts of Nigeria, where armed groups continue to threaten lives and livelihoods, leaving communities vulnerable and residents living in fear.

In response to the attack, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu condemned what he described as a “beastly attack” on innocent civilians. He ordered the deployment of an army battalion to Kwara State to secure the affected areas, restore peace, and prevent further loss of life.

Government sources emphasized that the military presence is intended to protect citizens, support local law enforcement, and track down the perpetrators. As of now, no group has claimed responsibility, though security agencies are investigating possible links to armed extremist elements in the region.

The attack serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to address insecurity in Nigeria. Local communities are paying a heavy price for lapses in protection, and swift action is required to prevent future tragedies. President Tinubu’s prompt military deployment reflects the government’s commitment to safeguarding citizens and stabilizing affected areas.

Recovery and investigation efforts are ongoing. The exact death toll may rise as authorities continue to search affected villages. Meanwhile, residents and leaders are calling for stronger security measures, better intelligence, and coordinated efforts to ensure that such attacks do not recur.

This tragic episode underscores a simple truth: the safety of citizens must be paramount, and a nation’s stability depends on its ability to protect those lives.
