Mugabe’s Son Detained in South Africa Over Hyde Park Shooting Incident


South African authorities have detained Bellarmine Chantunga Mugabe, the youngest son of former Zimbabwean leader Robert Mugabe, following a shooting incident at a residence in Hyde Park, Johannesburg.


According to reports from South African media, a 23-year-old gardener was shot at the property and rushed to hospital in critical condition. Emergency services responded swiftly after gunfire was reported at the upscale Johannesburg neighbourhood.



The South Africa Police Service confirmed that two individuals were taken in for questioning in connection with the incident. One of those detained is reported to be Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe.

Authorities have indicated that the investigation remains ongoing, and the exact circumstances surrounding the shooting are still unclear. Officers reportedly recovered spent cartridges at the scene and are searching for the firearm allegedly used.


Police have not yet publicly disclosed a confirmed motive.



The injured gardener, believed to be employed at the residence, was transported to a nearby medical facility where he remains in critical condition as of the latest updates.

Medical officials have not released further details regarding his condition, and his identity has not been formally disclosed to the public.

Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe is the youngest son of Robert Mugabe, who ruled Zimbabwe for 37 years before being removed from office in 2017. Robert Mugabe died in 2019.

While members of the Mugabe family have occasionally made headlines over the years, this is one of the most serious criminal allegations involving the former president’s immediate family.



Police have stated that charges, including possible attempted murder, may follow pending the outcome of investigations. Authorities emphasized that due process will be followed and that all suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
