53 Migrants Feared Dead After Boat Capsizes Off Libyan Coast

Dozens Feared Dead as Migrant Boat Capsizes Off Libyan Coast

A tragic maritime incident off the coast of Libya has left at least 53 migrants dead or missing, among them two infants, after a rubber boat carrying people toward Europe capsized in the Mediterranean Sea.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) confirmed that the vessel, which had 55 people on board, ran into trouble several hours after departure. The boat reportedly began taking on water about six hours into the journey before overturning in waters north of Zuwara, a coastal town in northwestern Libya.

Only two people survived the incident. Libyan rescue authorities recovered both survivors, identified as Nigerian women, and transported them to safety. According to the IOM, the personal losses were devastating: one woman lost her husband in the disaster, while the other lost both of her babies.

The migrants are believed to have departed from Al-Zawiya, a departure point west of Tripoli frequently used by smuggling networks. The group included nationals from several African countries, reflecting the diverse flow of migrants who continue to use Libya as a transit route despite its instability.

The latest incident adds to the growing humanitarian crisis along the Central Mediterranean route, which remains one of the deadliest migration corridors in the world. The IOM reports that at least 375 migrants were recorded dead or missing in January alone, while warning that the real number is likely higher due to unreported shipwrecks and missing vessels.

Human rights groups and international agencies continue to raise alarms over the use of overcrowded and unsafe boats by smugglers, often leaving migrants with little chance of survival once mechanical failure or bad weather strikes.

As search efforts continue, the tragedy highlights the urgent need for coordinated international responses to address unsafe migration routes and the conditions pushing thousands to risk their lives at sea.
