Tragedy in Cross River: Two Men Killed in Machete Fight Over Plantain

A shocking incident has left the Akpap-Okoyong community in Odukpani Local Government Area, Cross River State, mourning after two middle-aged men lost their lives in a machete fight over a seemingly trivial dispute, a missing bunch of plantain from a farm. According to eyewitnesses, the conflict began when Effiong allegedly accused Edet of taking plantains from his farm. The disagreement quickly escalated, and both men armed themselves with machetes, resulting in a violent fight.

During the altercation, both men sustained severe injuries. They were rushed to a local health centre for medical attention, but tragically, neither survived due to the inadequacy of medical facilities in the area.

The Cross River State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that investigations are underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the clash and why local intervention did not prevent the tragedy. Authorities have appealed to residents to remain calm and allow the investigation to unfold, emphasizing that violent disputes should never escalate to such extremes.

Residents of Akpap-Okoyong are in mourning, with many expressing shock that a dispute over something as small as plantain could turn deadly. Community leaders have urged members to seek peaceful conflict resolution methods and stressed the importance of mediation to prevent similar incidents in the future.
