Troops Rescue Five Kidnap Victims in Kogi Forest, Recover Decomposing Bodies

Nigerian Army troops carrying out sustained anti-kidnapping operations in Kogi State have successfully rescued five abducted victims during a forest clearance operation in Lokoja Local Government Area.

The rescue followed intelligence-led operations targeting suspected criminal hideouts within forested areas believed to be used by kidnappers to hold victims and evade security forces. According to security sources, the operation was part of ongoing efforts to dismantle kidnapping networks operating along key routes and rural communities in the state.

During the operation, troops encountered abandoned camps believed to have been recently occupied by kidnappers. Five victims were found alive and rescued from the forest, though they were reportedly in distress after spending days in captivity. The rescued individuals have since been evacuated and handed over to relevant authorities for medical attention and debriefing.

In a tragic development, the troops also recovered decomposing bodies believed to be victims who may not have survived their ordeal. The remains were discovered in secluded areas of the forest, highlighting the deadly nature of kidnapping activities in the region. Efforts are ongoing to identify the deceased and notify their families.

Military authorities described the operation as a significant breakthrough in the fight against kidnapping and criminality in Kogi State. They reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining pressure on criminal elements until the forests and surrounding communities are cleared of kidnappers and other violent groups.

Residents of Lokoja and neighboring communities have expressed cautious relief following the operation, while also calling for increased security presence, continuous patrols, and better intelligence gathering to prevent future abductions.

The Nigerian Army has urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue to provide timely information to security agencies, stressing that community cooperation remains critical in winning the fight against kidnapping and insecurity across the country.
