Troops Recover Over 1,270 Rounds of Ammunition Hidden in Drainage Channel in Borno

Troops Recover Ammunition Cache Hidden in Drainage Channel in Borno

Nigerian troops have uncovered a large cache of ammunition concealed inside a drainage channel in Maiduguri, Borno State, in a development that highlights ongoing security threats in the region.

According to security sources, the discovery followed a tip-off from local intelligence, prompting troops to conduct a targeted search operation in the area. During the operation, soldiers recovered more than 1,270 rounds of ammunition, along with explosive warheads, carefully hidden inside the drainage system.

The recovered items are believed to have been stored for future use by criminal or insurgent elements operating within or around the city. Security analysts say the location of the cache suggests an attempt to evade detection by security patrols while keeping the weapons accessible.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the exact types of ammunition recovered, but sources confirmed that the items were safely secured and moved to a military facility for further analysis and disposal.

Military officials emphasized that the operation was successful due to timely intelligence, underlining the critical role of cooperation between civilians and security agencies. The tip-off allowed troops to act swiftly before the weapons could be retrieved or deployed.

“This recovery demonstrates the value of actionable intelligence in preventing potential attacks,” a security source said, noting that drainage channels and abandoned infrastructure are increasingly being exploited to conceal weapons.

The operation forms part of continued efforts by the Nigerian military to disrupt insurgent logistics and dismantle hidden supply networks in the North-East. Despite improved security in parts of Borno, authorities say remnants of armed groups still attempt to move or store weapons within civilian areas.

Troops have intensified patrols and search operations across Maiduguri and surrounding communities to prevent the movement of illegal arms and ensure public safety.

Security agencies have urged residents to remain alert and report suspicious movements or objects, stressing that community cooperation remains essential in sustaining peace and preventing attacks.

Investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible for concealing the weapons and to determine whether the cache is linked to any planned operations.
