Students Escape Fire Through Balcony as Blaze Engulfs Building Near Auchi Campus 



Panic broke out early yesterday morning after a fire incident engulfed a student residence located behind Farnet Campus 2 in Auchi, Edo State, forcing occupants to flee for their lives in a terrifying scramble.


Eyewitnesses said the fire started in one of the rooms on the upper floor of a two-storey building, rapidly spreading and filling the space with thick smoke. Trapped by the flames and unable to access the staircase in time, several students were left with no choice but to escape through the balcony.


Videos from the scene showed students climbing, jumping, and receiving help from people below as fear and confusion filled the air. Shouts for help could be heard as onlookers rushed to assist those stranded above.


Fortunately, no deaths were recorded, though some students reportedly sustained minor injuries and shock while escaping the blaze. Personal belongings, including laptops, clothing, and academic materials, were destroyed in the fire.


Residents in the area believe the incident may have been caused by electrical faults or overloaded power connections, a common risk in off-campus student housing. However, authorities are yet to release an official statement confirming the cause.

The incident has renewed concerns about fire safety standards in student accommodations, particularly buildings located outside school campuses where regulation and inspection are often limited. Many students living in the area complained about the lack of fire extinguishers, emergency exits, and safety awareness.


Emergency responders arrived later to secure the area and prevent further damage, while affected students were temporarily relocated with help from friends and local residents.

As investigations continue, students and parents are calling on landlords, school authorities, and government agencies to prioritise safety inspections, enforce building regulations, and ensure that student housing is fit for habitation.
