Soludo Meets Onitsha Main Market Leaders as State Pushes End to Monday Closures


The Anambra State Government has taken another decisive step toward restoring full commercial activity in the state following a high-level meeting between Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo and leaders of the Onitsha Main Market.


The meeting, which focused largely on the persistent Monday sit-at-home disruption and the long-term future of the market, brought together government officials and market executives in what observers describe as a firm but strategic engagement.



At the heart of the discussion was the governor’s insistence that Onitsha Main Market must operate on Mondays, in line with the state’s directive that all markets and businesses remain open on every working day.


Governor Soludo stressed that continued closures are damaging the state’s economy, livelihoods, and reputation as a commercial hub. Market leaders, on their part, acknowledged these concerns and pledged to work with the government to ensure compliance going forward.


Security around the market, especially on Mondays, was also discussed, with traders raising concerns about safety as a key factor affecting turnout.




Beyond the sit-at-home issue, the governor used the opportunity to outline two broad development paths for the market’s future.

According to discussions at the meeting, the options include:

- A complete redevelopment of the market into a modern commercial complex that aligns with its original master plan, or

- A comprehensive regeneration of the existing market, involving structural reorganisation, removal of illegal constructions, and improved access and parking facilities.


Governor Soludo made it clear that any long-term plan would require cooperation from traders, particularly in addressing congestion, unapproved structures, and poor spatial planning that have developed over time.

While redevelopment and regeneration were openly discussed, there was no immediate demolition order or fixed timeline announced at the meeting. Instead, the governor emphasized that decisions would follow consultations, planning, and compliance with state regulations.

He cautioned that illegal structures would not be protected indefinitely, noting that urban renewal remains a core part of his administration’s vision for Onitsha.



Market leaders reportedly welcomed the engagement, describing it as necessary for restoring confidence and stability. They assured the governor of their readiness to mobilise traders toward reopening on Mondays, while also calling for visible security presence to support compliance.

The meeting signals a tougher enforcement phase against economic shutdowns, while also opening a broader conversation about modernising one of West Africa’s largest markets.



For now, the key takeaway is clear:

Monday trading is expected to resume, dialogue on redevelopment continues, and the state government appears determined to restore normalcy to Anambra’s commercial life.
