New Year Fire Destroys Ikotun Electronics Market in Lagos, Traders Count Losses
New Year Tragedy as Fire Razes Ikotun Electronics Market in Lagos
What should have been a moment of joy and renewed hope turned into devastation for traders at the Ikotun electronics market in Lagos State, after a massive fire outbreak destroyed the entire market in the early hours of the New Year.
The fire reportedly started around 12:05 a.m., just as residents across the area were welcoming the New Year with celebrations. While fireworks lit up the skies in nearby neighborhoods, thick smoke and raging flames were consuming shops and warehouses inside the popular electronics market.
By the time traders arrived at the scene in the morning, the market had been reduced to rubble. Countless shops were completely burnt, with electronic goods, spare parts, appliances, and other valuables lost to the inferno. Early estimates suggest that goods worth billions of naira may have been destroyed.
Eyewitnesses described a helpless situation as the fire spread rapidly through the tightly packed stalls, leaving little room for intervention. Some traders reportedly attempted to salvage items, but the intensity of the blaze made it impossible.

As of the time of this report, no casualties have been confirmed, but the emotional and financial toll on affected traders is enormous. Many of them depend solely on the market for their livelihood, and the incident has raised concerns about how they will recover from such losses.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, and authorities are expected to launch an investigation to determine what triggered the outbreak. Questions are also being raised about fire safety measures, emergency response time, and the availability of functional firefighting equipment in major markets across Lagos.
For many traders, the fire has cast a dark shadow over the beginning of 2026, a painful reminder of how quickly years of hard work can be wiped away in minutes.
As investigations continue, affected traders are calling on the Lagos State Government, emergency agencies, and well-meaning Nigerians to come to their aid, stressing the urgent need for support, relief materials, and long-term solutions to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
