What should have been a night of joy and reflection turned into terror in a quiet Kwara State community as gunmen carried out a daring palace attack on New Year’s Eve, leaving a monarch and his son abducted and the queen injured.

Residents of the community were still marking the arrival of the New Year when the calm was shattered by the sound of gunfire from the palace. According to accounts from locals, the attackers struck late in the evening, arriving in numbers and moving with confidence, suggesting a well-planned operation.

Eyewitnesses say the gunmen stormed the palace compound abruptly, firing shots into the air and forcing their way inside. The sudden attack caused panic among palace occupants and nearby residents, many of whom fled into the night for safety.

Amid the chaos, the attackers reportedly went straight for the traditional ruler, abducting him along with one of his sons. In the process, the queen was shot while attempting to escape the violence. She was later rushed to a medical facility, where she is said to be receiving treatment.

The assailants then fled the area with their captives, disappearing before help could arrive.

By morning, the palace stood eerily quiet, surrounded by stunned residents struggling to come to terms with the tragedy. Instead of New Year greetings, the community woke up to fear, grief, and unanswered questions.

Many residents described the monarch as a peaceful and respected leader, making the attack even more painful. Local sources say the incident has deeply shaken confidence in security, especially as it occurred on a night when families expected heightened safety.

The attack has renewed concerns over rising insecurity in parts of Kwara State and Nigeria at large. Residents are questioning how armed men could invade a royal palace, abduct a traditional ruler, and escape without resistance.

Calls have intensified for security agencies to act swiftly, rescue the abducted victims, and reassure communities that such attacks will not become the new normal.

As of the time of this report, security operatives are said to be investigating the incident and working to track down the perpetrators. No official details have yet been released on arrests or negotiations.

For now, the community waits, hoping for the safe return of their monarch and his son, and praying that the New Year does not continue with fear and bloodshed.
