Tragedy struck a rural community in Niger State on Saturday after armed men launched a violent attack on a popular local market, leaving at least 30 people dead and several others taken away by force.


The attack occurred at Kasuwan Daji market in Demo village, where residents had gathered for routine trading activities. According to local accounts, the assailants arrived suddenly in the afternoon, causing panic as traders and buyers attempted to flee for safety.



Eyewitnesses described scenes of confusion and terror as the gunmen opened fire indiscriminately. Market stalls were reportedly set ablaze, while food items and valuables were looted. Many victims were caught off guard, with little opportunity to escape the violence.


Some residents said the attackers moved swiftly through the area, targeting the market before extending their rampage to nearby homes. Several people were reportedly abducted during the raid, raising fears for their safety.




Following the attack, the affected community was left devastated. Families searched desperately for missing loved ones, while survivors recounted the horror of witnessing neighbors and relatives killed in broad daylight.


Local leaders confirmed that many of the victims were traders who relied on the market for their daily livelihood. The destruction of goods and property has also deepened the economic hardship faced by the community.




Security agencies have since moved into the area, launching operations to track the attackers and rescue those abducted. Authorities say investigations are ongoing to determine the identities of the gunmen and the motives behind the assault.
