The Enugu State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s Armed Forces, fallen heroes, and their families during the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day and Wreath-Laying Ceremony held in Enugu on January 15.

Speaking at the event, Governor Peter Mbah emphasized that the state’s support for military personnel goes beyond ceremonial observances. He noted that the government remains dedicated to practical care, advocacy, and sustained collaboration with the Federal Government to ensure that serving officers, veterans, and families of fallen heroes are treated with dignity and respect.

According to the governor, January 15 serves as an important moment for reflection, reminding Nigerians of the sacrifices made by men and women who laid down their lives in the line of duty to secure peace and safety for others. He acknowledged that the impact of such sacrifices extends far beyond the battlefield, affecting families and loved ones for a lifetime.

“When a soldier falls, the loss does not end at the frontlines,” the governor stated. “It enters homes and is carried by spouses, parents, children, and loved ones. Their pain becomes a shared responsibility.”

The governor also reflected on Nigeria’s historical experiences, including the Civil War and subsequent internal conflicts, stressing that these periods underscore the consequences of division and the importance of unity. He highlighted the need for restraint, dialogue, and collective responsibility in preserving peace and national stability.

In his remarks, Governor Mbah reiterated that remembrance must also translate into action, particularly in caring for those still living. He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to the values upheld by the Armed Forces, including unity, discipline, service, and respect for human life.

The ceremony, observed annually across the country, honors Nigeria’s fallen military personnel and provides an opportunity for governments and citizens alike to reflect on the cost of peace and the importance of national cohesion.
