Canada Deports 366 Nigerians in 10 Months as Nearly 1,000 Others Face Removal

Canada has deported 366 Nigerian nationals within a ten-month period, while 974 more Nigerians are currently listed for removal, according to official immigration enforcement data. The figures highlight a sharp increase in deportations and signal a tougher stance by Canadian authorities on immigration compliance.

Between January and October, Canadian immigration officials carried out removals involving Nigerian citizens whose legal status in the country had expired or whose immigration claims were unsuccessful. The deportations were conducted under Canada’s immigration enforcement framework, which mandates the removal of foreign nationals who no longer have legal grounds to remain in the country.

In addition to those already deported, 974 Nigerians are presently classified as “under removal procedures.” This status indicates that their cases have reached an advanced stage, with deportation expected unless legal relief is granted.

While deportation figures often attract public attention, immigration experts note that most removals from Canada are not criminal-related. The primary reasons include:

a) Failed refugee or asylum claims

b) Overstaying visas or permits

c) Violation of immigration conditions

d) Misrepresentation during application processes

e) Inadmissibility rulings under Canadian immigration law

In many cases, individuals may have exhausted all appeal options, leaving enforcement agencies legally bound to proceed with deportation.

Nigeria ranks among the top ten countries whose nationals were deported from Canada during the period under review. While the number does not place Nigeria at the very top, it reflects a growing trend linked to increased Nigerian migration to Canada over recent years, particularly through study permits, visitor visas, and asylum routes.

The high number of pending removals also suggests that immigration enforcement actions are likely to continue in the coming months.

Canada has recently intensified its immigration enforcement operations, aiming to clear long-pending cases and restore credibility to its asylum and visa systems. Authorities have emphasized that deportations are carried out after due process, including hearings, reviews, and appeal opportunities.

Officials insist the policy is not country-specific but rather focused on legal compliance, regardless of nationality.

For affected individuals and their families, deportation can be deeply disruptive. Many deportees have lived in Canada for years, built social networks, or started families. In some cases, children born in Canada may be impacted when parents are removed.

Back in Nigeria, returnees often face economic, emotional, and social challenges, especially those who invested heavily in migration processes.

The deportation of 366 Nigerians in under a year, with 974 more awaiting removal, underscores the reality that migration opportunities come with strict legal responsibilities. As Canada tightens enforcement, migrants are being urged to seek proper legal guidance, maintain valid status, and avoid irregular pathways.

The development also serves as a broader reminder that immigration systems globally are becoming more enforcement-driven, especially amid rising migration pressures.
