Bandits Demand ₦28.9m Before Ransom Talks for Abducted Worshippers in Kaduna

Bandits Set Precondition Before Ransom Talks Over Abducted Worshippers in Kaduna

Fresh details have emerged surrounding the abduction of Christian worshippers in Kurmin Wali community, Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State, as armed bandits reportedly placed an unusual condition before opening ransom negotiations.

According to accounts from community leaders and families of the victims, the kidnappers are demanding ₦28.9 million as compensation for motorcycles they claim were destroyed or seized during recent military operations in the area. The abductors insist that this demand must be met before any discussion about ransom for the captives can begin.

The worshippers were abducted during coordinated attacks on several churches while Sunday services were ongoing. The assault caused panic across the community as gunmen stormed the areas and whisked away scores of people, including women and children.

Although some victims reportedly managed to escape during the chaos, a large number remain in captivity, raising fears among residents and religious groups.

Unlike typical ransom negotiations, the abductors are said to be prioritising payment for 17 motorcycles, which they allege were lost during military raids targeting criminal hideouts. The motorcycles were reportedly valued at approximately ₦1.7 million each, bringing the total demand to nearly ₦29 million.

Community sources say the bandits have not yet stated how much ransom they intend to demand for the release of the worshippers, insisting instead that the motorcycle issue must be resolved first.

Security agencies have acknowledged the attack and confirmed that efforts are ongoing to locate the captives and dismantle the criminal networks responsible. Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and assured residents that rescue operations are underway, though operational details remain restricted for security reasons.

The incident has left the Kurmin Wali community deeply shaken, with families anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones. Religious leaders and human rights advocates have condemned the attack, describing it as another troubling example of insecurity affecting places of worship.

The situation highlights the evolving tactics of armed groups in Nigeria’s northwest, where criminal gangs increasingly impose unconventional demands and exploit vulnerable communities. Observers warn that addressing the root causes of banditry, alongside sustained security operations, remains critical to preventing similar incidents.

As investigations and rescue efforts continue, residents hope for the safe return of all those abducted.
