Abubakar Atiku Abubakar, son of former Vice President and two-time presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a significant political shift ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The defection took place in Abuja, where Abba Atiku was received by senior figures of the ruling party. In his remarks, he announced his decision to align with the APC, stating that he believes the party currently offers a more viable platform for national stability and progress.

Beyond switching parties, Abba Atiku went further to publicly pledge his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s second-term ambition. He also committed to mobilising members of his political structure and supporters across the North to back the APC and the president’s leadership agenda.

According to him, the move was driven by personal conviction rather than family pressure, stressing that political decisions should be guided by national interest and individual belief. He encouraged his supporters to see the decision as a forward-looking step rather than a betrayal of political heritage.

The development has drawn wide attention, largely because of Atiku Abubakar’s long-standing role as a leading opposition figure. However, the former vice president later clarified that his son’s action was a personal choice, noting that he does not impose political views on his children.

Political observers say the defection highlights the growing realignments taking place as parties quietly position themselves ahead of 2027. While its immediate electoral impact remains uncertain, the move adds to the narrative of shifting loyalties and internal dynamics within Nigeria’s political landscape.

As the countdown to the next general elections continues, Abba Atiku’s defection is expected to fuel further debate about party strength, political identity, and the evolving nature of loyalty in Nigerian politics.
