Anambra Arrests Five Illegal Revenue Collectors in Nnewi
Anambra State Cracks Down on Illegal Revenue Collectors in Nnewi
The Anambra State Internal Revenue Service (AIRS) has arrested five individuals in Nnewi for engaging in illegal revenue collection from tricycle riders, marking another step in the state’s ongoing efforts to curb unauthorized levies and protect citizens.
The suspects, Edwin Okonkwo, Sunny Obasi, Christian Oziri, Christian Chinedu, and Nnamdi Nworie, were apprehended while allegedly collecting unauthorized fees ranging from ₦300 to ₦500 from tricycle operators across multiple points in Nnewi.
According to AIRS officials, these individuals were not authorized by the state to collect revenue, and their actions contravened state law.
Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo has repeatedly emphasized the importance of eliminating illegal revenue collection in Anambra. The state government has warned that only officially designated channels, including AIRS-approved personnel and revenue offices, are permitted to collect fees from businesses, transport operators, and residents.
The arrests form part of a broader enforcement campaign to:
- Protect tricycle riders and other operators from unlawful extortion
- Ensure transparency in revenue collection
- Uphold the rule of law across Anambra communities
An AIRS spokesperson confirmed that the agency acted promptly following complaints from tricycle riders and local residents who reported harassment and illegal fee collection. The spokesperson stated:
“The government of Anambra State does not condone any form of extortion. Anyone found collecting revenue outside approved channels will be arrested and prosecuted. This action is a clear warning to others who may attempt such illegal activities.”

The five suspects are expected to face legal proceedings in accordance with state law. Their arrest sends a clear signal to other potential illegal collectors that unauthorized revenue collection will not be tolerated in Anambra.
Illegal revenue collection has long been a concern in various Nigerian states, with transport operators and small businesses often the most vulnerable. Anambra’s proactive measures, including community reporting channels and state enforcement, aim to protect citizens while ensuring that revenue generation remains lawful, accountable, and transparent.
By tackling illegal revenue collection, the Soludo administration is reinforcing its commitment to lawful governance, public trust, and economic fairness.
