Accident on Bende Road Umuahia as Lexus RX 350, Mercedes Benz Collide

Accident Reported on Bende Road, Umuahia as Two Vehicles Collide

A road traffic accident was recorded yesterday along Bende Road in Umuahia, Abia State, involving a Lexus RX 350 and a Mercedes-Benz 190, raising fresh concerns about unsafe overtaking on busy roads.

Eyewitnesses said the accident occurred as a family traveling back to their base after the holiday season attempted to overtake the Mercedes-Benz from the right-hand side, an unsafe and prohibited maneuver on Nigerian roads.

During the overtaking attempt, both vehicles collided, causing the Lexus RX 350 to lose control and crash into a roadside gutter. The impact left both vehicles damaged, with the Lexus sustaining more visible damage.

As of the time this report was filed, no casualty was recorded. Occupants of both vehicles were said to have escaped without serious injuries, a development described by witnesses as fortunate given the nature of the crash.

Other road users and nearby residents reportedly rushed to the scene to assist and ensure free movement of traffic while the situation was brought under control. Traffic flow was briefly slowed but later normalized.

The incident has once again highlighted the dangers associated with wrong-side overtaking, which remains a leading cause of road accidents across the country.

Motorists are advised to:

-Overtake only when safe and permitted

-Avoid impatience on busy roads

-Observe speed limits and traffic rules

Authorities continue to stress that road safety is a shared responsibility, especially during post-holiday travel periods.
