Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, recently presented a historic ₦1.44 trillion budget for 2026, the largest ever proposed by any state in the South East. Tagged “The Budget of Economic Breakthrough,” it represents a staggering 78% increase from the 2025 budget.

According to the governor, the budget aims to fast-track development, boost the economy, and improve living standards for Imo residents. Over 83% of the allocation is earmarked for capital projects, focusing on infrastructure, economic growth, and long-term sustainability under the Shared Prosperity agenda.

While the figures are undeniably impressive, the questions remain:

a) How transparent will the spending be?

b) Will accountability mechanisms ensure the funds are properly utilized?

c) Is this record-breaking budget truly for the benefit of the people, or is it more political and ambitious than practical?

As the budget now awaits review by the Imo State House of Assembly, residents and stakeholders are calling for clearer breakdowns and oversight to prevent mismanagement. The challenge is ensuring that such a monumental budget translates into real impact on the ground, not just numbers on paper.

Imo residents deserve answers and results, not promises. Will this be a breakthrough, or just another headline?
