A devastating fire broke out at Arena Market in Oshodi, Lagos State, causing panic among traders, commuters, and residents in one of the city’s busiest commercial hubs.


Eyewitnesses reported that the fire started unexpectedly in the early hours, quickly spreading through the densely packed rows of shops and stalls. Thick smoke billowed into the sky, drawing crowds and emergency responders to the scene as traders and passersby struggled to contain the blaze. 



With emergency services arriving later than many had hoped, market traders, residents, and volunteers mobilized quickly, using available buckets, shop extinguishers, and combinations of water and sand to try to suppress the advancing flames.


Despite their best efforts, several stalls and goods were destroyed before the fire was brought under control. Powerful gusts of wind and the close proximity of wooden display structures made containment more difficult.


A trader at the market who witnessed the outbreak described the situation as “chaotic,” with many people scrambling to salvage items while others worked together to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby shops.




As of the time of this report, the cause of the fire remains unknown. Fire safety officials and investigative teams have begun preliminary inquiries, but no official determination has been announced.


Initial speculation ranges from electrical faults to improperly stored combustible materials, but authorities have urged residents and traders not to jump to conclusions until a thorough investigation is conducted.




Arena Market is home to hundreds of small business owners who rely on daily sales to support their families. The fire’s damage has dealt a heavy blow to livelihoods, with many traders reporting that their merchandise was completely destroyed.


One of the affected traders, speaking tearfully, said

   "This is our source of income. Some of us had no insurance. We don't know how we will recover


Many other victims expressed deep concern over the lack of functional fire safety infrastructure, including fire extinguishers, accessible water sources, and official emergency response equipment within the market.



The incident has reignited an ongoing discussion among Lagos residents and market stakeholders about the urgent need for improved fire safety protocols in open markets and commercial zones.
