Tension Rises as Security Forces Deploy to National Assembly Over #OccupyNASS Protest

Tension heightened around Nigeria’s National Assembly complex on Monday as security agencies, including soldiers and other operatives, were deployed following a protest under the banner #OccupyNASS.

The demonstration, which drew civil society members, activists, and concerned citizens, focused on demands for greater transparency in Nigeria’s electoral process, particularly the call for mandatory real-time electronic transmission of election results ahead of future polls.

Eyewitnesses reported a heavy security presence around key entry points of the National Assembly, with personnel from the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Police Force, and other security agencies positioned to prevent any breach of the legislative complex. Armoured vehicles were also sighted in strategic locations around the area.

Despite the tense atmosphere, the protest remained largely peaceful, with demonstrators chanting slogans and displaying placards calling on lawmakers to protect democratic principles and uphold electoral credibility. Protesters accused the National Assembly of attempting to weaken electoral safeguards through proposed legislative amendments.

Some prominent political figures and public commentators were also seen at the protest ground, lending support to the call for electoral reforms and urging authorities to respect citizens’ constitutional right to peaceful assembly.

Security officials at the scene did not issue an immediate statement explaining the scale of the deployment, but sources indicated that the move was intended to maintain public order and prevent any escalation.

As of the time of filing this report, there were no confirmed cases of violence or arrests. However, the situation remained fluid, with security agencies maintaining a tight watch on the area.
