Senate Declines Mandatory Electronic Transmission of Election Results
Senate Declines Proposal to Make Electronic Transmission of Election Results Mandatory
![]() |
The Nigerian Senate has declined a proposal seeking to make the electronic transmission of election results mandatory.
The decision was taken on Tuesday during plenary, as lawmakers considered provisions of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, 2026.
During clause-by-clause consideration of the bill, a motion was moved to amend the Act to require presiding officers of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to electronically transmit election results from polling units immediately after collation.
The proposal, when subjected to a voice vote, was not adopted by the Senate.
Consequently, the chamber retained the existing provision of the Electoral Act, which provides that election results shall be transmitted in a manner determined by INEC. The provision allows the Commission to deploy electronic transmission where it deems appropriate.
Following the development, public reactions trailed reports suggesting that the Senate had rejected electronic transmission of results. However, the Senate leadership later clarified that the decision did not remove electronic transmission from the electoral process but declined to make it a compulsory legal requirement.
The Senate thereafter proceeded with consideration of other clauses of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.
