University Student Fined ₦150k for Ghosting Boyfriend After Collecting ₦3k Transport Fare
A rather unusual relationship drama has stirred conversations online after a Magistrate Court reportedly fined a university student, Rhoda Adu, ₦150,000 for failing to keep a promise she made to her boyfriend after collecting money from him.
According to reports, Rhoda’s boyfriend, Mr. Olapitan, had sent her ₦3,000 as transport fare so she could visit him. However, after receiving the money, Rhoda allegedly switched off her phone, ignored his messages, and never showed up.
What many assumed would end as a lovers’ quarrel reportedly took a serious turn when Mr. Olapitan decided to report the matter to the police. He claimed that after multiple failed attempts to reach Rhoda, he felt deliberately ignored despite evidence that the money had been received.
The case eventually made its way to court, where screenshots of WhatsApp messages and the bank transfer receipt were presented as evidence.
The Magistrate Court reportedly ruled against Rhoda, stating that the evidence showed she had collected the money under the promise of visiting her boyfriend but failed to do so without explanation. The court then imposed a ₦150,000 fine.
The ruling has since sparked heated debate online, with many Nigerians questioning whether relationship promises should escalate into legal matters.
As expected, social media users wasted no time reacting:
- Some argued the fine was excessive, calling it a “breakup turned lawsuit.”
- Others said Rhoda should have simply returned the ₦3,000 or communicated clearly.
- A few joked that “love is now legally binding in Nigeria.”

While the case continues to trend, it has left many wondering where the line is drawn between personal relationships and legal accountability. For now, one thing is certain: what started as a simple visit plan has turned into one of the most talked-about relationship stories online.
