Nigerian military urges Sokoto residents to return explosives taken from U.S. airstrike site to prevent fatal accidents.
Nigerian Military Urges Sokoto Residents to Return Explosive Materials Taken from U.S. Airstrike Site
In a serious warning to civilians, the Nigerian military has appealed to residents in Sokoto State to immediately return explosive materials reportedly taken from the site of a U.S.–led airstrike conducted on Christmas Day. The Defence Headquarters emphasized that handling such materials poses a grave risk to life and property.
According to a statement from military officials, some residents of communities near the airstrike site in Tangaza Local Government Area were found to have collected remnants of unexploded ordnance and other explosive devices. While the airstrike targeted suspected militant hideouts, any civilian contact with these materials could trigger fatal accidents.
The military urged that only trained security personnel should manage and safely neutralize explosives. “These are not toys or souvenirs,” a spokesperson said. “We urge all civilians who may have taken any explosive materials to return them immediately to the nearest military or police unit. Your life and the lives of your neighbors are at stake.”

The Defence Headquarters also reassured residents that all collected materials will be safely disposed of, emphasizing the government’s commitment to community safety while continuing counterterrorism operations in the region.
This appeal highlights the ongoing challenges in ensuring civilian safety during military operations and underscores the critical need for public cooperation in areas affected by counterterrorism strikes. Authorities warned that failure to comply could lead to legal consequences, given the highly dangerous nature of the explosives.
The Nigerian military continues to collaborate with international partners, including the United States, in tackling militant activities, while also ensuring that innocent civilians are protected from harm.
Residents are urged to treat all unexploded remnants from military operations with extreme caution and report them immediately.
