A tragic road accident has claimed multiple lives in South Africa after a minibus collided head-on with a lorry while attempting a risky overtaking manoeuvre, authorities have confirmed.

According to police spokesperson Mavela Masondo, the minibus driver tried to overtake two vehicles at once when the crash occurred. In the process, the driver lost control and slammed into an oncoming lorry, resulting in a devastating impact.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene, where they were met with wreckage scattered across the road and severely damaged vehicles. Several occupants of the minibus were reportedly killed instantly, while others sustained critical injuries and were taken to nearby medical facilities for urgent treatment.

Police have since launched a full investigation to determine the exact circumstances leading up to the collision. However, early findings point to dangerous overtaking and possible speeding as major contributing factors.

The incident has once again drawn attention to South Africa’s ongoing road safety challenges, with the country recording high numbers of fatal crashes each year. Poor adherence to traffic rules, reckless driving, and overloaded public transport vehicles remain persistent concerns for authorities.

Road safety advocates have repeatedly warned that overtaking on narrow or busy highways is one of the leading causes of deadly accidents, particularly involving minibuses used for commercial transport.

Police have urged motorists to exercise caution, obey speed limits, and avoid risky manoeuvres that could endanger lives. “No journey is worth risking lives,” Masondo stressed, calling on drivers to prioritise safety over haste.

As investigations continue, families of the victims are left mourning yet another preventable tragedy on the nation’s roads.
