Aviation Unions Reject Enugu Airport Concession, Threaten Industrial Action
Aviation Unions Reject Enugu Airport Concession, Warn of Possible Industrial Action
A coalition of aviation workers’ unions in Nigeria has openly opposed the Federal Government’s recent decision to concession the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, describing the process as insensitive, opaque, and exclusionary. The unions have raised serious concerns about how the concession was carried out and have warned that industrial action may follow if their demands are not addressed.
Aviation unions that represent workers across the sector, including ground staff, technical personnel, and other aviation professionals, have criticised the way the concession process unfolded. Their main objections include, lack of meaningful consultation with workers before the concession agreement was finalised, insufficient transparency about the terms and implications of the agreement, and concerns about job security, conditions of service, and workers’ rights under new management structures
Union leaders have labelled the process “insensitive” because many employees were reportedly left out of discussions that directly affect their future roles and livelihoods.
The concession of the Enugu airport is part of a broader government strategy to modernise and improve airport infrastructure through private sector participation. Such concessions are intended to bring in capital, specialist expertise, and efficiency gains that may not be possible under purely government management.
However, aviation workers argue that the way the concession was executed lacked adequate worker involvement, particularly at key stages where decisions affecting labour conditions were made. The unions’ statement highlights several areas of concern, job security and re-employment terms for existing staff, clarity on roles and responsibilities under the new concessionaire, continuity of pay, benefits, and tenure, and participation in future decision-making that affects workers directly
Workers believe that these protections should have been built into the agreement or at least negotiated prior to the handover, rather than being addressed after the fact.

In response to what they view as an unfair process, the unions have issued a warning that workers may embark on industrial action if their concerns are not taken seriously by the Federal Government and relevant authorities.
While no specific date has been set for such action, union leaders say they will not hesitate to mobilise their members to ensure that workers’ rights are upheld and that no aviation employee suffers unjust treatment as a result of the concession.
Government officials emphasise that concessions are part of efforts to attract private investment into the aviation sector, improve service quality, and boost infrastructure development. Proponents of the concession argue that private partners can bring much-needed funding and innovation to airport operations without necessarily diminishing the role of workers.
However, the lack of early engagement with labour groups is now seen as a major oversight that has sparked pushback from organised labour.
The aviation unions have called for an urgent meeting with government representatives to discuss their grievances and seek clarifications on how workers’ interests will be safeguarded. The outcome of these negotiations may determine whether tensions escalate or are resolved without disruption.
In the meantime, airport operations remain normal, but the situation remains dynamic as both sides prepare for further discussions.
