Abuja Police Raid Hotspots, Recover ₦31.1m Armoured Cables in Anti-Vandalism Crackdown

Abuja Police Crack Down on Criminal Hotspots, Recover ₦31.1 Million Worth of Armoured Cables

The Nigeria Police Force in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, has recorded a major breakthrough in its fight against infrastructure vandalism and criminal activities.

In a series of intelligence-driven raids across identified crime hotspots in the city, operatives of the FCT Police Command recovered armoured underground power cables valued at over ₦31.1 million.

According to the police, the operation was carried out in strategic areas including Mabushi, Maitama, and parts of the Central Business District, following increased reports of cable vandalism and public infrastructure sabotage.

During the raids, officers recovered nearly 300 cut-to-size armoured cables, suspected to have been stolen from public power installations. The cables, which are crucial for electricity distribution, were allegedly cut and prepared for illegal resale.

Several suspects were arrested in connection with the operation. In addition to the armoured cables, police also recovered:

-Cable-cutting and pulling tools

-Manhole covers

-Other vandalised infrastructure materials

-Items suspected to be illicit drugs

The police believe the suspects are part of a wider network involved in stealing and trading public utilities for profit.

The FCT Police Command described infrastructure vandalism as a serious threat to public safety and economic stability, noting that it disrupts electricity supply, damages roads, and costs the government millions of naira in repairs.

Police authorities have assured residents that investigations are ongoing to track down buyers, collaborators, and scrap dealers involved in the illegal trade of stolen cables.

The command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public assets and urged residents to report suspicious activities around power installations, manholes, and construction sites.

“This operation sends a clear message that vandalism and criminal activities will not be tolerated in the FCT,” the police stated.

As Abuja continues to grow as Nigeria’s capital city, security agencies say sustained collaboration between law enforcement and residents remains key to safeguarding public infrastructure and maintaining law and order.
