Nigeria Confirms U.S. Airstrikes on Terror Targets Were Coordinated With Abuja

Nigeria has officially addressed recent reports of United States airstrikes targeting Islamic State–linked militants, making it clear that the operation was not a surprise action nor a violation of Nigeria’s sovereignty.

According to the Nigerian government, the strikes were carried out with full coordination and prior understanding between Abuja and the United States, as part of an ongoing counterterrorism partnership aimed at weakening violent extremist groups threatening national security.

Nigeria emphasized that

a) The airstrikes were not unilateral actions by the U.S. military.

b) They followed intelligence sharing and strategic collaboration between Nigerian security agencies and international partners.

c) The operation aligned with Nigeria’s broader efforts to combat terrorism, especially groups linked to the Islamic State that have expanded beyond the North East into parts of the North West.

By making this clarification public, the government sought to calm public concerns and dispel speculation that foreign forces were acting independently on Nigerian soil.

Nigeria has long faced complex security challenges, including insurgency, banditry, and extremist violence. These threats often operate across borders and adapt quickly, making intelligence and technological support critical.

The government’s statement suggests that international cooperation, when structured and mutually agreed upon, remains a key tool in addressing security threats that local forces alone may struggle to neutralize swiftly.

One major concern among Nigerians was whether such airstrikes compromised national sovereignty. Nigeria’s response directly addressed this, stressing that all actions were conducted within agreed frameworks and in line with national security interests.

The confirmation also reflects an attempt at transparency, acknowledging the operation rather than allowing rumors and misinformation to dominate public discourse.

This development highlights a growing reality: modern security threats are global, and tackling them often requires strategic alliances rather than isolation. While questions about effectiveness, civilian safety, and long-term solutions remain valid, Nigeria’s position is that cooperation, when controlled and intentional, is preferable to silence or denial.

As security challenges continue to evolve, Nigerians will be watching closely to see whether such collaborations translate into lasting peace and improved safety on the ground, not just successful military headlines.
